LABOR DAY ESCAPE

PLAN A LABOR DAY WEEKEND ESCAPE

Grab your 6Ku for a holiday weekend road trip! Automobile traffic can make travel tough over the Labor Day holiday, so hit these hotspots by bike instead – you’ll enjoy free parking, stress-free travel, and burn calories that let you splurge on some local eats and drinks.
PIKE PLACE MARKET
(Seattle, WA – USA)

Arrive by bike on the Elliott Bay Trail and explore the Pike Place outdoor market (including the original Starbucks Coffee location), Space Needle, Seattle Aquarium, or Seattle Art Museum.

For an extra treat, hop on the Bainbridge Island ferry for beautiful skyline views from the water, including the Space Needle. Bikes are first-class citizens on the Washington State ferry system, and you’ll be the envy of the many cars waiting in line to load and un-load.

BROOKLYN’S OCEAN PARKWAY BIKE PATH
(Brooklyn, NY – USA)

Brooklyn’s Ocean Parkway bike path dates back to the 1800’s – one of the USA’s first bike paths. It offers 5 miles to explore from Prospect Park to Coney Island’s famous boardwalk and beach. The mostly flat terrain is perfect for exploring on a fixed gear or singlespeed 6KU bike, no gears necessary.

BIG BEAR LAKE
(Big Bear Lake, CA – USA)

Big Bear is the classic weekend escape from Southern California summer heat, offering cooler temperatures thanks to mountain altitude. Pickup a bike map to guide you, then return to the village for lunch, dinner, and lake views.

More adventurous riders can detour up to Snow Summit Mountain Bike Park with lift-served downhill riding. Rental bikes are available or bring your own MTB.

PIER 39 / FISHERMAN’S WHARF
(San Francisco, CA – USA)

Enjoy classic views of Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, and San Francisco Bay at Pier 39. If you’re lucky Sea Lions will greet you! Car parking is crowded and expensive here, so put your bike on public transit and then ride right out from the station instead.

Starting from Pier 39 it’s an easy, flat ride along the waterfront to AT&T Park (home of the Giants baseball team) and the Bay Bridge. You can also leave your bike (don’t forget your lock) and take on of the many harbor sightseeing tours offered by boat.

After you’ve worn yourself out, hit the Ghirardelli Square area and sample some locally made chocolate delicacies. The hot chocolate hits the spot as temperatures cool in the evening and the fog rolls in!
